Fox is backing HIMYM

Variety is reporting that Fox is focusing on their sophomore hits, like our very own How I Met Your Mother.  While it’s not news worthy that HIMYM is getting a lot of attention lately, I did find it interesting that Fox is focusing on this.  I’ve done a good bit of searching and I can’t find any official site that Fox owns the rights to HIMYM, but I was able to find several unofficial sites that have made similar comments.  Anyone know how all this might work? Does Fox Television (not the TV station but the parent corporation) hold the rights to the show then sell them to CBS?  I’d love to hear from anyone that understand how ‘the biz’ works.

From the article:

With so few newbies to worry about, Walden and Newman say their focus has been on the studio’s soph skeins: “Prison Break,” “Bones” and laffers “How I Met Your Mother” and “My Name Is Earl.”

20th Century Fox owns How I Met Your Mother. CBS bought the rights to air the show.

This kind of thing happens a lot.

Will & Grace was owned by Warner Brothers, but NBC bought the airing rights.

Thanks Jon. How’d you find this out?

Another example of this is SCrubs. Scrubs is owned by made by touchtone. Who is owned my Disney who owns ABC. This hurts Scrubs in some ways. For example unlike almost every TV show these days it is not filmed in HDTV. Mainly, because Disney doesn’t care they dont get any money out of new shows. HOwever, they do get money out of reruns and DVDS. At the same time NBC jerks the show around quite a bit. Mainly, I would assume since they won’t make money on the back end through DVDs and syndication.

Ben: I know this kinda stuff because I am a huge TV geek. And it wasn’t too hard to figure out. If you have the DVDs, you’ll see both on the packaging and in the credits for each episode that HIMYM is affiliated with and produced by 20th Century Fox while it airs on CBS. The show wouldn’t fit into Fox’s craptacular lineup of shows anyway. It’s common for a lot of shows to be produced at another network’s studios.

Keith: I KNOW! It sucks how much NBC messes with Scrubs. It’s like they know there’s a loyal following, especially since national and local syndication is doing great. But they keep putting Scrubs in different (and sometimes awful) timeslots. I mean, come on…Thursday nights against Grey’s Anatomy AND CSI?!?!

Honestly, I started watching Scrubs maybe a year ago on DVD, and reruns online. Its great. But the new season is the first time I watch is weekly brand new with all the other SCrubs fans.
