“Spoiler Alert” Review
“Spoiler Alert”
This weeks episode was “Spoiler Alert”, and it was no doubt a good one.
Two major things happen in this episode: 1) Ted brings his new girlfriend Cathy to dinner, and the gang dislikes her immensely but Ted doesn’t know why, and they won’t tell him the reason. And 2) Marshall is waiting for his Bar results to find out if he is a lawyer or not, but when they get posted online, he forgets his password, and has to wait for the results to come in the mail.
After asking dozens of times (and making half hearted, lame guesses) the group finally tells Ted what was wrong with Cathy: “She talks way to much.” Ted realizes that they were right, and the glass shatters (literally) so Ted has to dump her. He points out one of Lily’s flaws to Marshall; the fact that she chews extremely loud, and Marshall’s glass shatters as well. Tension forms between the group when everyone points out each others flaws (Marshall sings everything he is doing, Ted corrects everyone, Robin uses the word “literally” too much, and Barney uses lame catch phrases all the time.) They all argue over it, until someone mimics one of Marshall’s dumb songs and everyone agrees that he wouldn’t stop singing that song for weeks, Marshall remembers it was his password and finds out that he is indeed a lawyer now!
At the end of the show, the whole group is sitting at the bar celebrating Marshall’s Bar results, and all of their annoying traits are combined to make one funny scene. Ted also runs into Cathy again, who has become engaged to a deaf man, which Ted quickly ruins by signing to him “She can sure talk a lot, huh?”.
~ Here’s some random trivia for you all; the original title for this episode, was “White Noise”.
The Good (in no specific order):
- Marshall wanting to have a meeting in a dark alleyway to obtain the firewall hacker. (it was just very Marshall-like, I liked it)
- “You’re driving the ‘I want to have sex with her’ truck, and it has a huge blind spot”
- The combined annoying traits at the end, I found it so cheesy, that it was funny.
- Of course, me being a Barney fan, “Law suit up!”
- The subtitled “Glass Shattering” when Ted tells Cathy’s fiancé that she talks a lot.
The Bad (no specific order):
- Barney’s dog pooping joke. (Not Barney’s best moment)
- The pointless and random sex story that Barney tells at Maclarens.
- The fact that Marshall (after 10 years with Lily) didn’t know how loudly she chewed. (I know, I know, that’s the point of the episode…I just found that hard to believe)
Final Thoughts: Way more good points than bad points, handful of funny jokes, and the story was pushed forward with Marshall’s Bar results. I am giving this episode a rating of “Awesomeness” !

The part leading up to Marshall remembering his password (where everyone was displaying their annoying traits) was the funniest couple of minutes I’ve seen on TV this year. I didn’t find it cheesy at all… it really worked for me because those traits didn’t just come out of the blue, they’ve been seen throughout the series (mostly). Last night’s episode is an example of why this is one of the few shows that I currently watch.

I totally agree with you, that part was hilarious…the cheesy part I was talking about, was afterward, at the bar. When they were all using their annoying traits one after another. And don’t get me wrong, just because I thought it was cheesy, that doesn’t mean I didn’t find it funny, because I did :]]
And yes, the show’s continuity is a main reason why it’s one of the few shows I watch on TV as well.

Great recap!
Just a quick note. Would it be possible for recaps to be behind a cut of some sort? I know that other people in the UK don’t watch the show online, and it would be spoiled for them seeing an indepth recap.
Just a thought,

Nice. I loved it. Defiantly one of the funnier episodes. I find the glass shattering kind of annoying though. The first two times they did it I thought my cat was on top of our hutch knocking stuff off.
