“The Yips” Review

“The Yips” Review

Ted kicks off the episode by telling his kids that in 2007, the cool thing to do was join a gym, and since he was so out of shape, that’s exactly what he did; and he dragged the rest of the group into it as well. Marshall signs up for a trainer who at first looks like a hot bimbo, but turns out to be the workout devil, who wants Marshall’s soul. Immediately after, Barney runs up with startling news, he crossed paths with Rhonda, the old woman he lost his virginity to, and she didn’t remember him!

Back at Maclarens, Marshall re-accounts the day, and how sore his body was. Then Barney comes up and explains to the group who Rhonda was exactly. He tells everyone about how him and his girlfriend broke up, and how crushed he was (still being a virgin at 23) and how he went to his brother James for help (not knowing he was gay yet). James tells him that to get over this, he has to go out, and have sex with a woman; Barney seems confused as to he doesn’t have anyone to have sex with, but James seems to have the answer. Rhonda, the Man-maker. Their mom’s friend who had sex with all the young virgins she could. So he goes over to her house to become a man.

Barney shows back up at the smoothie bar that Rhonda works at and asks why she could not remember him, since she said he was the best she ever had. Turns out, Rhonda was saying that, because James had had sex with her so she would compliment Barney and make him feel good. This puts Barney in a slump, and at the worst possible time, right when he gets an invite to the Victoria’s Secret party he’s always wanted to go to. At the party, Barney makes a complete fool out of himself in front of tons of models, not to mention the one and only Heidi Klum, having what James describes as “the yips“. Barney is close to giving up when Heidi gives him the advice to go prove to Rhonda that he IS a man that can rock her world. Sadly Rhonda declines and barney hits rock bottom, no longer suiting up, and not even trying to pickup girls. Meanwhile Ted and Robin lose all sexual attraction towards each other (or so they say) when they see how sweaty and gross the other is.

In the end, Rhonda shows up at Maclarens and Barney assumes she has changed her mind about saying no, she tells him that he needs to have a nice respectful night with a woman without trying to sleep with her (since Barney cannot recall the last time he wasn’t trying to pickup a woman). We cut to Rhonda and Barney playing cards, and Rhonda giving in to Barney’s wishes. They have sex and this time Barney really did rock her world, he buttons up his shirt with a little “I know I did baby” and walks out giving a short “Daddy’s back” before the scene ends. Everyone in the group decides to quit the gym because it was too hard for them, go figure.

The Good:

  • Continuity with Rhonda, and how Barney lost his virginity to her.
  • Marshall’s hot instructor really being a mean witch.
  • Barney’s “yips” at the party.
  • James’s appearance on the show.

The Bad:

  • Just the fact that they tried to make Barney seem not cool (which is impossible)
  • They made Barney’s dream of getting into a Victoria’s Secret after party seem so lame and mediocre since he didn’t even have a good time.
  • None of the material really seemed 100% fresh, (it was all mostly funny) just not as good as it’s been in the past.

Final Verdict: I have to give this one an “Awesomeness”, on the basis that it wasn’t as funny as “SlapsGiving“, but it wasn’t a complete failure either. Seeing Barney not in a suit for once, was quite shocking, and that’s what keeps a show alive; surprises.

It is really nice to see that you take your readers comments on board. A response from yourselves would have been nice in regards to the previous posts.

Wow. You really know how to listen to your audience.

With all do respect, and no offense at ALL…if you don’t want to know what the episode is about, don’t read the post. It’s really that simple. I’m not trying to ruin the episode for you, that would just be rude; my job, is to recap/review the episodes, it’s your job to read them (or not in some cases).

    I’m sorry for the trouble,

    -Joel

Thanks for the (kind of late) review :)

I completely agree. Everybody treated it like it was the worst ever episode (next to my least favorite, Arrivederci, Fiero), but I actually loved the episode. Come on, we got to see how James found out he was gay, Hippie Barney, Barney getting the Yips at the worst possible time, and Barney’s First time!
