Since I wasn’t able to record it, I’ll have to save my full writeup until I get it on iTunes, but I did just want to give some quick thoughts right after watching it.

After a few duds, I really liked this episode. I was afraid it was going to be too Robin heavy, but I think they did a great job with this one. The little Barney’s all over that girl nearly made we wet my pants!

I’ll have a full review or podcast up soon. I’ve got game bitches!

So I know there are a lot of HIMYM viewers who are not in the states and are forced to watch How I Met Your Mother
a day later by downloading it illegally. Well in the chatroom last week one reader (I’m sorry I forgot your name) turned me on to a website that will actually stream the live broadcast. The only catch is that the broadcast is 2 hours delayed. So HIMYM is broadcast live at 8pm ET (USA). Which would be 2am in Paris, France. Then you add 2 hours for the delay and say you lived in Paris. You could watch a live stream (commercials and all) at 4am. I know that is a little unreasonable but it is just another way fans of the show can get their fix. I haven’t tried this myself, so if you have feel free to leave more information to other fans in the comments.

I really like the recent trend in creating auxiliary websites for a show. They are nice little nuggets for those of us that obsess about a show, and they offer just another way to attract more viewers. Not to mention they make these characters seem just a little bit more real. This site, the slap bet count down, along with all the character’s myspace pages give us another way to observe/interact with the characters we only get to see for 30 minutes a week. Keep it up CBS!

“Kids, there is more than one story of how I met your mother. You know the short version, the thing with your mom’s yellow umbrella, but there’s a bigger story. The story of how I became who I had to become before I could met her.”

… dary! And we’re back.

Season 3 returned last night with a bang. We join our friends at the end of the summer after Robin and Ted broke up with Ted talking about how each person goes through their ritualistic after-break-up routine. Ted grows a beard, paints and generally sulks. Barney tries to help him out, but Ted isn’t ready. That is until he sees Robin and her new boy toy, Gael (Enrique Iglesias). From this point, the show turns to how can Ted “win the break up”. In his quest, Ted meets Amy (Mandy Moore), a tattooed wild-woman who Ted begins to fall for and who gives Barney a run for his money. Amy talks Ted into getting a tattoo, against Barney’s protest, which I won’t blow the secret, but it’s good.

The rest of the episode is about Ted trying to win the bet, but really get over Robin. We learn towards the end that they somehow figure how to make it work and remain friends.

I’m still not sure if I really liked this episode or if I am just really excited about the season starting back again. The episode does enlighten us on how the series might continue. All of us who have been watching from the beginning can recognize the changes between the previous two seasons. Season one, the show was new and stuck to the theme of Ted trying to meet his perfect woman. Meeting several along the way, learning something about himself, but her not being the one. Season two was all about Lily and Marshal getting over their break up, Ted and Robin being a couple, and Barney… well being Barney. It looks like season three is going back to Ted looking for the perfect woman. Only this time the writers just come out and say what we can really expect. “There is a bigger story. The story of how I became who I had to become before I could meet [the mother].” Will we ever meet the mother? I’m not sure, but at least the writers are being frank about how this isn’t really just the story of two people meeting one another, but rather a story of Ted growing up and what he’s learned on the way to meeting his perfect woman.

Some thoughts I had while watching this episode were, and if you were in the chat room last night you probably already know all these:

Didn’t like Ted’s beard but liked the mutton-chops.

Didn’t like Lily’s new hairdo, but we’ve been through that.

Didn’t care for Mandy Moore’s character. As people mentioned in the chat, it was just a made up role for a guest star to bring in new viewers. Which I hope it did, and I hope they stick around.

We got to see skin! Barney sans shirt, Robin in a bikini, and Ted with out a shirt too.

Liked Barney’s explanation of how sex on a wind-surfer was impossible.

Not sure what to feel about the Cadillac reference. You probably all saw at the beginning of the show, and on their website, that the show is being sponsored by Cadillac. Then Ted says “he’s the Cadillac of rebound guys.” Not sure that that was intentional, but it was there. I’m okay with it if they work in sponsor name dropping as smooth as they did this episode, but will hate it if they start saying things like. “Let’s all get in my new Caddy, which B the W gets 35 estimated miles per gallon!” Tread carefully CBS.

Loved that they brought in the slap countdown into the episode!

Some of may favorite quotes:

“We are going to get cirque du so-laied” – Barney

“You’re suited up, I’m bearded down. Let’s get out there and win this thing” -Ted

“Oh well you can check off: 8:54, dress up like a dork and bother the cool kids, now beat it nerd!” -Amy (Mandy Moore)

“I wouldn’t let you take care of the imaginary kids I make up to score with single moms” -Barney

“This is SO going in my blog” – Barney (Which “B the W”, when he said the first time in season one inspired me to start howimetyourblog.com)

The music in this episode was off of Mandy Moore’s new album “Wild Hope” (so the clip at the end tells us) all but the song Enrique sings in their apartment. That was his new song “Somebody’s Me” (in Spanish), which CBS links to his video here.

As a follow up post to my open letter to CBS, I wanted to give you guys some places where you can watch full episodes of HIMYM. The best way of course is to watch them when they air, or record it and watch it whenever. However there are some people that can’t watch it when it airs and haven’t ponied up for a DVR (TiVo) yet, so here are some alternatives.

I must warn you some of these are not exactly “legal” in the USA, and I am not a lawyer so beware before you watch.

The first place is INNERTUBE on CBS.com. Go to the CBS home page and on the lower left hand side is a button (Barney’s Face) that will lead you to CBS’s online viewing area. Currently the only full episode is “Bachelor Party.” Of the options this is the most legal as it is shown by CBS.

Another place is YouTube.com. There you can search for “How I Met Your Mother” and watch almost any episode. This is probably fine, legally speaking, for you to watch, though the uploaders could get in some trouble. And there is always the risk that they can be taken down at any time.

The final place to watch HIMYM is to download them from the internets. Bittorrent is known for having almost every show known to man for download, but beware this could get you in some trouble. It’s in a legal grey area in my opinion. The show is aired for free on free public airwaves and can be recorded off of those airwaves. What gets grey is the ability to redistribute these recordings. So beware.

You can also always use the link in the sidebar and purchase your copy of season 1 on DVD (and help this blog out too!) or Join Netflix and get it that way too (also helping out this blog). The important thing is to keep watching the show. How else will you be able to keep up with everything written here?

Dear CBS,

For two seasons now, I have enjoyed watching “How I Met Your Mother” every Monday night. I love the show so much that I have created a website dedicated to the show that includes episode notes, episode soundtracks, actor news, fan content, and a podcast (howimetyourblog.com). The only hindrance to my full enjoyment of the show is that it is not available to purchase on iTunes. Many of CBS’s other shows are available, on iTunes; why not HIMYM? Because the show has gathered a large following this last season, the next obvious step is to allow fans to purchase the show in iTunes. If made available on iTunes, we fans can watch HIMYM on our iPods and more easily share this great show with others around us. I humbly ask that you take my request into consideration and initiate the venture to carry “How I Met Your Mother” in the iTunes Store.

Sincerely,
Ben

I have also been looking for this information, so I thought I’d put the question to you. Have you found any info on if there will be a 3rd season? All I have seen are the weekly ratings and those seem to be pretty good. How I Met Your Mother is either at the top or near the top for Monday night ratings, and as we mentioned on the Monday Night Football podcast, that episode was the show’s highest rated episode.
